How to Calculate Concrete Volume for Slabs and Columns
Calculate slab and column concrete in cubic metres. Work through rectangular and cylindrical examples, allowances and the distinction between volume and bags.
A useful starting point
Use consistent units, measure non-overlapping elements and add their geometric volumes. Apply a stated order allowance afterward; use actual product yield for bags and keep structural sizing and mix design outside the estimate.
Concrete volume is the space inside the specified form, expressed in cubic units. For a rectangular element, multiply length, width and depth. For a round column, use the circular section area times its height.
These calculations estimate quantities from supplied dimensions. They do not select a safe slab thickness, concrete strength or reinforcement.
Fix the units and scope
Convert every dimension before multiplying. A depth of 120 mm is 0.12 m, not 120 m. The NIST conversion reference distinguishes cubic volume from area.
List slabs, beams and columns separately, and check whether their dimensions overlap. If a column height includes the slab depth already counted, deduct or redefine that intersection rather than ordering the same space twice.
Work a slab-and-column example
Assume a separate 4 × 3 m slab, 0.12 m thick, and two independent cylindrical elements of diameter 0.3 m and height 2.4 m. These are arithmetic examples, not a construction design.
| Element | Calculation | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Slab | 4 × 3 × 0.12 | 1.44 m³ |
| One cylinder | π × 0.15² × 2.4 | about 0.169646 m³ |
| Two cylinders | 2 × 0.169646 | about 0.339292 m³ |
| Total | slab + cylinders | about 1.779292 m³ |
With a chosen 5% allowance, the order target is about 1.868257 m³. Enter the non-overlapping elements in the concrete volume calculator; preserve full precision until the purchase decision.
Distinguish ready-mix volume from bag yield
A cubic-metre requirement is not a bag count. Divide by the actual mixed yield per bag if you are considering a bagged product.
For an explicitly hypothetical yield of 0.012 m³ per bag, the example target would need 156 whole bags. Do not replace that yield with the bag's dry mass or the amount of water added.
QUIKRETE's calculators are product-specific and distinguish concrete and mortar applications. Consult the selected product's data and suitability rather than transferring another mix's yield.
Discuss the allowance with the supplier
Uneven excavation, form dimensions, handling and delivery arrangements can change the practical order. An allowance should be a visible input agreed for the job, not a hidden universal percentage.
Confirm the supplier's ordering increments, delivery constraints and treatment of surplus separately. The calculator does not calculate pump losses, fresh-concrete performance or placement procedures.
Questions that prevent errors
Can I calculate a sloping or irregular slab?
A uniform-depth rectangle cannot describe every shape. Break down justified geometry or obtain a takeoff from the project documents; do not substitute a guessed average without documenting it.
Can I estimate floor screed the same way?
The geometric principle is similar, but product yield and application requirements differ. Use the separate screed guide and keep quantities in your renovation budget.
