How to Measure L-Shaped Countertops: Area, Cutouts and Exposed Edges

Measure an L-shaped countertop without counting its corner twice. Separate surface area, sink cutouts and exposed edge lengths before requesting a quote.

A useful starting point

Calculate the union of measured sections, deduct valid cutouts and record exposed edges as lengths. An area estimate is not a slab-nesting plan, cabinet linear measurement or fabrication quotation; final templating remains separate.

An L-shaped countertop can be measured as overlapping rectangles, provided the corner overlap is deducted once. Surface area and exposed edges are different quantities and should appear on separate lines.

Rust-Oleum's countertop instructions distinguish square and linear measurement. The method here is our own geometric example for early planning, not a fabrication template.

Draw each section and its overlap

Measure lengths, depths and the common corner. Mark walls, visible ends and openings. Decide whether a dimension includes the shared corner before multiplying.

Use consistent units. The NIST reference distinguishes square metres from linear lengths. A cabinet quote in linear metres is not automatically a countertop area measurement.

Work a two-section L shape

Assume one rectangle is 3 × 0.6 m and the other 2 × 0.6 m. They overlap at a 0.6 × 0.6 m corner.

Step Calculation Result
First section 3 × 0.6 1.8 m²
Second section 2 × 0.6 1.2 m²
Shared corner 0.6 × 0.6 0.36 m²
Union area 1.8 + 1.2 − 0.36 2.64 m²
Example sink cutout 0.5 × 0.4 0.2 m²
Net surface 2.64 − 0.2 2.44 m²

The cutout must sit within the countertop. The countertop area calculator avoids double-counting overlapping sections and cutouts; compare its diagram with the actual arrangement.

Record exposed edges separately

If only the two inward-facing front stretches are selected, their lengths in this example are 2.4 and 1.4 m: 3.8 m total. If both short 0.6 m end returns are also exposed, the selected total becomes 5 m.

The entire geometric perimeter is not automatically chargeable finished edging. Wall-side edges, seams and opening edges can have different treatment.

The tool tracks selected original side portions left on the exterior. It does not price polishing or fabrication around a sink opening.

Ask how the supplier prices the job

Deducting a sink's area does not prove the supplier can sell the remaining surface alone. Stock slab dimensions, nesting, grain direction, seams, edge profiles and cutout work may affect a quotation.

Use a rough measurement to compare scope, then have the supplier confirm final templating and fabrication. Do not order a finished top from a conceptual illustration.

Common questions

Is this also a material comparison?

No; use the existing countertop materials guide to compare surfaces and care. This article concerns geometry.

Can I add an island?

Yes, as a separate non-overlapping section when the model represents it correctly. Record its exposed edges independently and carry the supplier's full quotation into the renovation budget.
