How Much Plaster Do You Need? Coverage, Thickness and Bags

Estimate plaster bags from area, thickness and stated product coverage. A worked example separates net volume, allowance and complete bags.

A useful starting point

Use coverage at the manufacturer's stated thickness or an actual mixed yield per bag. Thickness scaling in the tool is a mathematical assumption within a suitable specification, not permission to apply any plaster at any thickness.

Plaster quantity needs a product specification as well as a wall area. A bag's mass does not tell you its usable coverage without a stated thickness or mixed yield.

British Gypsum's MultiFinish product information specifies its application thickness. The manufacturer's White Book finishes reference lists product coverage at stated thicknesses. These are product-specific figures, not a universal rate for every gypsum or cement render.

Define the surface and finish

Measure the area receiving this layer. Separate undercoat, finishing plaster and repair patches if they use different products or thicknesses. Deduct openings according to the actual scope.

Convert thickness before multiplying: 2 mm is 0.002 m. The NIST conversion reference distinguishes volume from area and mass.

Work a thin-finish example

Use a hypothetical measured area of 35 m², a 2 mm layer and a chosen 10% allowance. For this arithmetic example use the cited MultiFinish coverage of 10 m² per 25 kg bag at 2 mm, while checking the current sheet before an actual purchase.

Quantity Calculation Result
Net geometric volume 35 × 0.002 0.07 m³
Volume with allowance 0.07 × 1.10 0.077 m³
Equivalent volume per bag 10 × 0.002 0.02 m³
Bag requirement 0.077 ÷ 0.02 3.85
Whole bags round upward 4

Enter area, thickness and the product's reference coverage in the plaster and render calculator. Its equivalent yield comes from coverage times reference thickness; it is not the volume of a dry bag or its mixing water.

Understand thickness scaling

The tool can scale a stated coverage with thickness using a linear volume model. That does not authorize changing a product's allowed application range. If the wall needs a different layer or repair system, choose the correct product first and obtain its own data.

Two products with the same bag weight may have different yields. Do not reuse a skim coat rate for a cement-sand render or local undercoat.

Check the surface before ordering

Unevenness, local repairs and substrate conditions affect the real work. Agree what belongs in the net area and allowance with the plasterer. Keep unused complete bags distinct from material actually consumed.

The estimate does not calculate drying time, background compatibility, mixing proportions or required finish quality. Follow current product instructions for those matters.

Common questions

Can I estimate by kilograms per square metre?

Yes, when the supplier states the consumption for the relevant product and thickness. Convert it consistently rather than borrowing a generic rate.

Does paint use the same surface calculation?

It may share a measured area, but paint uses coats and coverage rather than plaster thickness. Continue with the paint guide and record preparation and application separately in the renovation budget.
