How the calculation works
The formulas
Add rug alternatives with X/Y offsets from the upper-left of the room. Each alternative is drawn separately with the same furniture. Coverage uses full rug area divided by room area; values above 100% indicate an oversized rug.
Right clearance = room length − rug X − rug length
Bottom clearance = room width − rug Y − rug width
Coverage% = rug length × rug width ÷ room area × 100
Assumptions to check
- All shapes are axis-aligned rectangles; furniture coverage measures footprint overlap, not how many legs touch the rug.
- Negative edge clearances indicate the rug extends outside the room.
A worked example
A 3 × 2 m rug centred in a 5 × 4 m room leaves 1 m on every side and covers 30% of the floor.
